Amesbury is a city located within Essex county on the left bank of the Merrimack river near its mouth. As of 2010 the census reported a population of 16,283. A former farming and mill town, Amesbury today is largely residential. Other than Salisbury to the east, it is one of the northernmost towns in the state. Newburyport lies southeast, West Newbury to the southwest, Merrimac to the west, and South Hampton, New Hampshire to the north. I-495, Route 150, Route 110 and I-95 are all major routes in Amesbury. Bus service is provided by Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority, and the nearest train station is in Newburyport. Educational institutions in Amesbury include, Amesbury Elementary, Charles C. Cashman Elementary, Amesbury Middle, Amesbury High, and Amesbury Innovation High School, and the private Sparhawk School. Amesbury has several rivers, lakes, and ponds, a town forest, conservation areas, and golf courses.
