Ashby is situated in Northern Central Massachusetts, with New Hampshire as its northern border, Fitchburg to the south, Lunenburg to the southeast, Ashburnham to the west and Townsend to the east. Covering 24.2 square miles, Ashby has a population of 3,161 according to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Ashby was first settled in 1676 and was incorporated in 1767. It is governed today by an open town meeting form of government. Ashby is part of the North Middlesex Regional School District, which includes the towns of Ashby, Pepperell and Townsend, all in Middlesex County. Ashby has its own elementary school, but shares middle school with Townsend, and then shares high school with Pepperell and Townsend. The community supports youth supports including Pop Warner Football & Cheering, TAP Basketball, Little League Baseball, Soccer, PAT Youth Hockey, and North Middlesex American Youth Football & Cheer. Ashby is accessed by Routes 31, and 119, and is approximately 12 miles from Route 2 and 25 miles from I-495.
