Amherst is a town in Hampshire County. In 2010 the census recorded a population of 37,819, making it the largest Municipality in Hampshire County. Amherst is pronounced without the h, which started the local saying, only the 'h' is silent in regards to both the pronunciation and the politically active populace of the town. The town is bordered by Hadley to the west, Sunderland and Leverett to the north, Shutesbury, Pelham, and Belchertown to the east, and Granby and South Hadley to the south. Due to Amherst's large student population that attends the three colleges in town (UMass Amherst, Amherst College, and Hampshire College), residents will find Amherst has no shortage of bus and rail transportation. Students attending any colleges in the Five Colleges Consortium have transportation fees included in tuition, operated by University of Massachusetts Transportation Services. The Amherst Regional Public Schools service the communities of Amherst and Pelham. Three elementary schools, as well as the middle/high schools of the system reside in Amherst.
